Then cut 4 or 5 slits in your crust to let the air escape so there will be no space between the filling and the crust of the pie
Very thinly sliced apples all the same size so they will cook evenly. I use an apple peeler, but you can peel and slice them with a knife if you don't have a peeler, leaving peels on the apples seems to mess up the texture of the filling.
You will need to start with 5 to 8 large granny smith apples. (Save your leftover cores and peels to make apple jelly or apple cider vinegar later). After the apples are sliced place them in a medium sized bowl and add the other filling ingredients. Stir until all the apples are coated.
You will need to have the oven preheated to 400 degrees. Place the pie in the oven on the bottom rack. If you are afraid your pie filling will spill over, you can place the pie on a cookie sheet before putting it in the oven.
Cook the pie for 20 minutes at 400 then cover your pie edges with foil and turn your oven to 350 and finish cooking. It should bake for 35 to 40 until apples are tender, and the crust is golden.
Grandma’s Homemade Apple Pie
How to make an easy and delicious apple pie. My grandma made the best apple pie. It had a delicious homemade flaky crust; the apples filling was soft and gooey. Apple pie was one of the favorite desserts she would make. My grandma’s kitchen is something I miss along with all the wonderful memories I have from there.
Apples for the pie
There is a lot of choices when it comes to picking apples for apple pie and I normally use whatever I have on hand which is honey crisp. They are my family’s favorite choice to eat. Crisp and sweet… I can’t stand to eat a mushy apple. Granny-Smith would be my go-to if I was buying apple just for a pie. They seem to keep a good texture and are tart enough providing balance to all the sweetness of the other ingredients.
Perfect Pie Crust
I have struggled and struggled to make a great tasting and nice-looking pie crust for years. One day I would make pie crust and it would turn out beautiful and delicious then the next time it would be dry hard and ugly. Now when I make a crust, I know it is going to be perfect every time. I have used this recipe (which is a recipe from the Pioneer woman) many times, and it has never failed to look beautiful taste delicious and be easy to handle.
