What Is Bone Broth?
Bone broth is a highly nutritious stock. It is made by simmering animal bones and connective tissue. Adding apple cider vinegar helps the bones release all the essential nutrients. It can used in cooking or as a hot beverage.
Benefits Of Bone Broth:
Bone broth is one of the leading sources of gelatin and natural collagen. Bone broths collagen helps maintain healthy skin. It is also helpful to the digestive system to expel waste.
Bone broth contains several vitamins and minerals. The nutrient content of bone broth depends on the ingredients and their quality.
It contains glycine, an amino acid that upholds the central nervous system. When taken before bed studies show glycine might aid in the quality of sleep.
Why Is My Bone Broth Not Gelatin
Bone broth gets its gelatin from the collagen in the bones. Not all bones are rich in collagen, to make a good broth you will need a variety of bones. For beef knuckles, shanks, oxtail and neck bones work the best.
Adding to much water will not allow your broth to gel properly. Fill your pot with bones and cover them with water about two inches.
Adding an acid like apple cider vinegar helps extract collagen from the connective tissue.
How Long Do You Cook Your Bones?
How long you cook your bones depends on the size of the bones. Larger bone cooks longer than smaller ones.
For beef bones simmer for at least 12 hours and up to 48 hours.
Where to Buy Bone to Make Bone Broth:
I get mine bones from the local grocery store. Don’t forget about your own kitchen, save your bones after cooking and use them to make bone broth.
What Bones Make Bone Broth:
You can use any animal bones to make bone broth. The most popular ones are chicken, beef, fish and wild game.
I have read that you can use beef bones up to 12 times to make broth and chicken bones can be used up to 3 time.
I will say if you reuse your bones the other batches would not be as flavorful.
