Place steak in a single layer on a cutting board. Using a mallet pound the steak with the spiked side of the mallet. Pound first side then flip over and do the next side of the steak.
Sprinkle meat with salt and pepper. In a skillet, brown meat in oil.
Combine 1 cup of butter, steak sauce, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1 1/2 Tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce in a skillet over medium to low heat.
In another skillet melt 1/4 cup of butter then add the onions, mushrooms, and peppers. Sauté until the onions and peppers are soft and slightly charred.
Slather butter on the insides of each sliced hoagie roll and place on a baking sheet. Bake in the oven until lightly toasted. Remove hoagie rolls from the oven and turn oven to low broil.
Dip each slice of bread into the sauce.Place back on the baking sheet, top with sliced meat, peppers, mushrooms, onions, cheese and the rest of the sauce. Put the sandwiches back in the oven and broil until cheese is melted.
Tips for Tenderizing Steak:
Lay parchment paper on a plastic or wood cutting board. Place the meat single file and sprinkle with salt. Firmly start pounding the meat with a spiked mallet, so that you can see the indention of the spikes on the meat. Turn it over and do the same thing to the other side. This tenderizes the meat by damaging the connective tissue of the meat. It also helps to flatten the meat for quicker and more even cooking and helps get the meat the same size.
Homemade Sourdough Hoagie Rolls
This was my second attempt at making these hoagie rolls and both times they turned out great. My son uses these to make pizza and cooks them in the air fryer. This recipe comes from Lisa at Farmhouseonboone.
This sandwich is also great with store bought hoagie roll or French bread.
Substitutions:
This recipe calls for white American cheese, but you can substitute with Havarti, Swiss, provolone, or pepperjack.
You can use sliced roast beef lunchmeat instead of deer or beef steak and this sandwich will still be delicious.
For picky eaters leave off the vegetables.
